The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Awards Thirteen Travelling Fellowships in Scotland

The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust has just awarded 13 Travelling
Fellowships in Scotland. The grants totalling £79,750 have just been awarded
to Scottish citizens from all walks of life to acquire knowledge overseas to
bring back the benefit for others in the UK. The Scottish Fellows will
travel to seven countries between them, across three continents, where they
will carry out a wide range of projects. The average length of each
Fellowship is five and a half weeks, with the Trust paying an average of
over £6000 per Fellow. This year’s Scottish applicants include a circus
producer, a police officer, a science education coordinator, an artist and a
community justice services manager.

The purpose of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellowships is to widen
an individual’s experience through overseas travel in such a way that he or
she grows in confidence, knowledge, authority and ambition. No previous
experience is required but their Fellowship must bring benefits to others in
the UK through sharing the outcome of the travel experience. This is
achieved in particular through the inspiration provided by the individual’s
example – his or her subsequent performance and achievements together with
the dissemination and application of new knowledge, different perspectives
and innovative solutions.

The Fellows selected come from all over the UK and are awarded on pure
merit, representing a wide variety of backgrounds, qualifications,
professions and interests.

The Scottish Fellows are:

  • Hugh Torrance, a youth work services manager from Glasgow, visiting the USA
to investigate meeting the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender
    young people

USA to investigate making rural retail work

  • Joanne Foo, a science education coordinator from Glasgow, visiting Canada
and the USA, to evaluate wildlife reintroductions by understanding their
    social, economic and ethical impacts

  • Beth Dynowski, a lead artist at a gallery in Glasgow, travelling to the USA
to examine how to improve access to the study and practice of art for all
people, as well as improving public access to centres of knowledge

Lanarkshire, travelling to Australia and New Zealand to investigate
improving the UK’s critical literacy education

  • Lisa Archibald, a service manager for a mental health charity from Pathhead,
Midlothian, visiting New Zealand to investigate mental health stigma in
    rural communities

  • Chris Aitken, a teacher of computer science from Wick, Caithness, travelling
to Belize leading a school conservation trip to examine wild plants and
animals in the forests, run in conjunction with the Royal Botanic Garden,
    Edinburgh

  • Ian Irvine, a Senior Manager of five care services in Scotland, living in
Glasgow, visiting Canada and the USA to look at developing further practices
    to reduce or prevent homelessness

  • Lynn Jolly, a community justice services manager, from Clydebank, travelling

    disabled offenders

In total 125 Fellowships have been awarded in the UK in 2013, with the
